Tempurpedic topper

Tempurpedic matress toppers can be a more affordable alternative to just getting a whole matress. They're not really cheap, but much cheaper than a mattress. If your current matress totally stinks, then I doubt very much that a tempurpedic topper is going to make it good. But if you just have small problems, then maybe this will help. If possible, see if you can return it within a certain time period in case you don't like it.
